What time do the races begin?
The 5K begins in the Spearfish City Park at 7 am.
The Half Marathon begins near Savoy in Spearfish Canyon at 7 am. The last bus to transport to the start line for the half leaves at 6 AM.
Can I register the day of the race?
You can register online until the day prior to the race. Race day registration is from 5:30 AM-6:00 AM (Half) and until 6:30 AM (5K). The cost increases $10.
Can I pick up my bib prior to the race day?
Pre-packet pickup is on Friday from 9 AM – 7 PM at the NHCASA Office 741 N 5th St Spearfish.
Is there a place for spectators?
In the Canyon, there is a parking area new Bridal Veil Falls and at the base of the canyon last water stop.
There is a large parking area at the finish line in Spearfish City Park.
For the safety of runners, it is best to not have increased traffic in the canyon. So, we encourage spectators to watch them at the finish!
If you want to watch the start, it is likely it will take you an hour to get back down the canyon because you will be behind runners.
How many water stops are there?
The Half Marathon has 5 water stops approximately every 2.5-3 miles. Water and Gatorade are provided at each water stop. There is fruit (bananas and oranges) at 7.8 (STOP 2) and 3.7 (STOP 4) miles from the finish and at the finish.
The 5K has one water stop.
Are there bathrooms?
There are public restrooms in the Spearfish City Park. At the half marathon start near Savoy, there will be porta potties and at approximately mile 5, 7.5, and 12.
How do I get to the Half Marathon start in Savoy?
Bus transport is available from 5:30-6 AM from the Spearfish City Park to Savoy for half participants. The last bus leaves at 6 AM. Runners can park at the Spearfish City Park (finish). Masks will be required for the bus ride and will be provided. You can also choose to have someone drop you off before the start of the race. I encourage those people to head down to Spearfish before the race start as it is difficult to pass all the runners once the race has started.
Is there a place for my stuff at the half start?
Race bags will be provided and brought to the finish. You may want a light shirt/jacket for the start as it is usually about 50 degrees.
What is at the finish line?
The finish line, located in Spearfish City Park, will have water, Gatorade, fruit, muffins, and lots of spectators! Chocolate milk is available for Half Marathon participants. There is parking available for spectators and half marathon runners who wish to ride the bus to the start. Participants and supporters will be asked to space out and social distance.
Can I walk the Half Marathon?
Yes, if think you can walk it in 3 hours. We put a time limit of 3 hours on the half marathon due to the temperature increase throughout the morning.

Is there a host hotel?

What is being done differently during COVID-19?
Currently the State of South Dakota has no travel restrictions. However, we will be following CDC recommendations in regard to mask wearing and social distancing. Masks will be required when riding the bus to the half marathon start. These will be provided. Participants and spectators will be asked to space out accordingly at the finish line and maintain 6 feet distance. We ask that runners and spectators do not participate if they are feeling ill (Fever or chills, Cough, Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, Fatigue, Muscle or body aches, Headache, New loss of taste or smell, Sore throat, Congestion or runny nose, Nausea or vomiting, Diarrhea) or have recently been exposed to COVID-19 (past 14 days). If needed, you can switch to the VIRTUAL race option. Since we are also offering a virtual option, there will be no refunds or deferrals this year. You can participate in person or run in your home state and submit your time.
